Highway vs. City Modes, which do I use?

Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.

Which do you use? It's really up to you. There is no performance advantage either way. If you have a quiet vehicle then maybe using City mode will be fine. If your vehicle is a convertible or is noisy, then Highway is best so you will not miss any alarms. NOTE: City Mode(s) does not effect Laser reception!

What does City 1 and City 2 modes do?

These extra City modes are available on models: 1595SE, 1640, 1670 and up, 1740 and up. City 1 Mode lowers the X band sensitivity. This is helpful for those automatic door openers in malls and shopping plazas that you pass by. City 2 Mode turns off X band. The other bands (K, Ka and laser) are not effected.
NOTE: Some towns/small cities may still use X band radar guns. Use caution when selecting City 2 mode!

When using either City 1 or City 2 modes, the audio alert is the same as Highway mode, unlike just City Mode which quiets the audio alert.

What does Quiet and Auto Quiet modes do?

Quiet Mode
- Quiet cancels audio during an alert and any new alert within 20 seconds. After 20 seconds, approximately 2 beeps are provided on any new alert and unit then remains quiet.

·      Press Quiet to cancel the audio.

·      Press Quiet a second time during an alert to restore the standard audio alert pattern; or turn the unit off, then on.

Auto Quiet- Auto Quiet reduces the selected audio level to level (1) approximately 5 seconds after a radar or safety radar signal is detected. The alert for any new signal within 20 seconds will resume at level (1). Auto Quiet does not affect VG-2 or laser alerts. NOTE: Units with an on/off volume control, the volume is switched to a low level clicking.

·      Press Quiet/Menu (before a signal is detected) to engage Auto Quiet.

·      Once the Auto Quiet mode is engaged, you may cancel the audio alarm by pressing Quiet.

·      Press Quiet (when the unit is not alarming) to cancel Auto Quiet mode.

What is Improved Performance?

Whistler's high end models now offer Improved Performance. These new models (1758, 1773, 1783, 1793, and the Pro-Series) not only offer better range than the models they replace but they also detect the newest police radar guns with POP
TM mode!

What is 360 Protection?

Units with 360 protection detect signals from all radar, laser (Perimeter protection only - Laser is not shot from the sides), VG-2 and safety radar systems wherever they come from; front, rear or from the side.

What is All BandTM/Total Band ProtectionTM?

Whistler laser-radar detectors detect all radar bands, laser, SWS and VG-2.

Model 1788/XTR-280 displays "NO BAT" but batteries are installed!

The message shown on the screen indicates that the battery voltage is too low to operate the unit. When the unit senses that the batteries are not installed, (even though they are) the internal charger is turned off. To prevent this from happening, plug in the unit to a constant 12 volt source or use a home charger to charge the batteries overnight when the display indicates that there is 20% life left in the batteries.

If the batteries do run all the way down, a home charger must be used to recharge the batteries.
